On January 6th, a news article was posted on Blooloop that the Smithsonian Museums saw a 20 percent increase in visitors for the year 2009.

… Total visits for the Smithsonian Institution were 30.0 million in 2009 versus 25.2 million in 2008.

The 2009 and the 2008 attendance figures for select museums are as follows* :

Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture    1.0 million  /  1.0 million

National Air and Space Museum    7.0 million  /  7.0 million

*Numbers are rounded to the nearest thousand or the nearest hundred thousand.
**Reopened November 21 after a 2-year renovation.

Note: Because admission to Smithsonian museums is free of charge, attendance numbers are not based on ticket sales. The figures are based on numbers derived by the use of hand clickers, which may introduce some margin of error.
