Amusement Parks: Six Flags Fiesta Texas - a Potted History

Related: Wonderland Park / Lakemont Park / Knoebels Amusement Resort / Sesame Place

Six Flags Fiesta Texas is an amusement park located in northwest San Antonio in Texas.

The amusement park covers approximately 200 acres of land which is just part of a 1600 acre development of USAA Real Estate’s La Cantera project – ‘La Cantera’ translates from Spanish into English as ‘rock quarry’ which is appropriate being that the amusement park now lies on land that was formerly an operational rock quarry. A minority shareholder in the project was Gaylord Entertainment but they would, ultimately, lose money and sell their stake back to USAA in 1995.

The initial construction of the amusement park began in early 1990 and it finally opened for business in March 1992.

The management and operations of the amusement park were taken over in 1996 by Time Warner who would add the ‘Six Flags’ brand name to it. USAA remained the sole owner of the amusement park, however, up until 1998 when it was acquired by Premier Parks who also now owned the entire Six Flags portfolio of amusement parks.

Today, there are over 50 rides at the amusement park which are contained in six themed areas. These are called Crackaxle Canyon, Rockville, Fiesta Bay Boardwalk, Spassburg, Wiggles World and Los Festivales.

Rides at the amusement park cover all ages and degree of thrill seekers from the relatively more gentle rides like Yosemite Sam’s Wacky Wagons, Whistle Stop, Yummy Yummy Fruit Wagon and the Wiggly Trail Ride to high octane thrill rides such as Superman: Krypton Coaster, Goliath, Poltergeist and Scream.

Admission to the amusement park also covers the entrance fee into its separate water park called ‘White Water Bay’ which is adjacent to the main park.  Once again, the rides cater for all ages in this section of the amusement park but popular thrill water rides include Big Bender, Tornado and Whirlpool.
