Once in a while an attraction opens somewhere in the UK that captures people’s hearts and minds, creates an enormous buzz of excitement and sends them clamouring for tickets. One such attraction has opened this year at London Zoo where there has been ‘unprecedented demand’ to see the £5.3 million Gorilla Kingdom enclosure.
It’s the brand new home to a colony of magnificent western lowland gorillas – and New Forest based DJ Willrich Ltd, one of the UK’s leading Audio Visual and Multimedia specialist companies, is proud to have made a very significant contribution to this unique exhibit.
DJW was invited to provide audio and video solutions for several key areas within the impressive enclosure of the ‘Kingdom’. Using state of the art technology and the innovative design practices for which this award-winning company is well known, the team’s installations have heightened the enjoyment of what was already an incredible visitor experience.
Arriving at Gorilla Kingdom, visitors are invited to wander down a path that leads into the enclosure - and this is where DJW’s expertise has really come into its own. On the basis that sound is one of the most significant elements when it comes to atmosphere, DJW has helped create one of the most atmospheric exhibitions at Gorilla Kingdom with the installation of Bose Model 32SE environmental speakers which bring the western lowlands to life as authentically as possible, right in the middle of the UK’s capital city. The effect is to transport visitors to another world.
The speakers are used to feed through ambient sounds along the pathway that leads into the enclosure, perfectly re-creating the atmosphere of the gorilla’s own natural habitat for zoo visitors as they wander along before emerging next to a “forest clearing” to view the majestic animals themselves.
Other installations at the site include high brightness LCD monitors to counteract the outdoor sunlight; panel-mounted speakers; a 40” audio visual LCD screen in The Boardwalk; and outdoor speakers.
London Zoo has been going through a period of significant change and modernisation, and Gorilla Kingdom, opened by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in March this year, is the Zoo’s most significant investment for more than 40 years. The Zoological Society of London, responsible for the Zoo and it’s animals, was careful to recruit contractors capable of providing high standards of service and unparalleled expertise in their specialist fields. National award winning AV and multimedia specialist DJW was delighted to have been selected and commissioned.
