New 3DBA/Kraftwerk 4D theatre opens at Tibidabo

A brand new, 72 seat 4D theatre from 3DBA/Kraftwerk Living Technologies has opened at one of Europe’s oldest amusement parks, the renownded Spanish venue Tibidabo in Barcelona.

The new theatre, which features film content from Belgian company nWave, has been installed in an established building which before was home to an old Crazy Mirror style attraction. This building has now been completely refurbished to house this new attraction in the park.

Owned by the municipality, the historic nature of the Tibidabo site means any new developments must be carried out under the strictest guidelines and, after the original idea of adding a ride attraction was vetoed, 3DBA proposed a theatre which was duly accepted as being more appropriate for the family market the theme park mainly caters to.

3DBA provided a complete turnkey solution for the new attraction, refurbishing the inside of the building to create the theatre and adding the pre-show area. Acoustic walls and a covered ceiling were among the items incorporated and the whole project was completed in under three months. A variety of special effects are also featured in the attraction, including water spray, wind, flashing lights and lightning, while the chairs used have one DoF.

Having opened the theatre on July 5th., the park chose to run three different nWave films for the 2007 season: "Haunted Mine Ride," "Fly me to the Moon" and "PandaVision."  The new attraction, which is in stark contrast to a number of the older rides and attractions in the park and something totally original for the site, has proved an enormous success from the begining with park guests of all ages.

“We are really happy with the investment we have made in the new theatre,” said Marc Capella, head of Tibidabo’s marketing and commercial department. “For us it is important as it represents brand new technology in the park, which is 100 years old and very traditional. But visitors can now see that we can improve and introduce new technologies.

“It is the first 4D theatre in Catalonia and it has given us a lot of notoriety. Our guests are very happy and are reacting very well and often want to repeat the experience. We are targeting the whole family (with the theatre) as we are a family park, but we also recognise that we must offer rides and attractions for young teenagers as well as they want to visit with their families. So we are trying to add attractions that will help us keep this sector too.”
