Sun and fun are coming soon to ski country; the construction of Vermont’s newest, biggest, splashiest indoor waterpark is well underway. Jay Peak Resort will soon boast a state-of-the-art, 40,000+ square foot park filled with slides, pools, water play areas, lazy rivers and more, with a massive retractable roof enclosure that opens up in warmer weather.
Designed, manufactured and now being installed by OpenAire, the beautiful, curved roof enclosure is the tallest one that OpenAire has built in North America. It’s 140 feet (42.67m) wide, 280 feet (85.34m) long and 43 feet (13.10m) high at the sidewalls, and includes a curved cupola at the apex which will allow for the 55’ (16.76m) Aqualoop slide tower. The enclosure will house a double FloRider surf wave, water basketball, a kids' area and lazy river. It will also be the first indoor waterpark in North America with the Aqualoop, an extreme ride that launches from the top of a 5-storey tower, sending riders down and around at a mind-blowing 40 mph.
The waterpark – designed by Black River Design of Montpelier, Vermont, and built by OpenAire and Williston, Vermont’s DEW Construction Corp. – promises to transform Jay Peak from a wonderful winter-only spot to an amazing year-round destination. It will be a great place to visit no matter what the weather; visitors will be able to relax and enjoy the warm water after a day of skiing, or head to Jay Peak for a summer vacation in the sun, where they can swim and play outdoors under the open roof.
“This has been an incredible project for us,” says Mark Albertine, OpenAire president. “It’s rewarding to see it under construction. Right from the start, all of the vendors involved wanted to create a truly special venue for Jay Peak; this beautiful waterpark is sure to attract even more visitors to their already incredible venue.”
OpenAire’s retractable roof won’t just look good – it will be good for the environment, too. Unlike traditionally built structures, it has a number of eco-friendly features that leave a smaller carbon footprint – and result in greater energy savings. For example, when the enclosure is open, humidity is exhausted naturally through the roof, so mechanical systems that control the atmosphere can be turned off, saving energy. Plus, the polycarbonate roof and insulated glass sides let in lots of sunlight, so no energy needs to be used to light the building during daylight hours.
Opening in less than a year, the Jay Peak waterpark is set to be a big draw for the resort; with easy access from the adjacent Hotel Jay, it will offer visitors a thrilling experience that’s the perfect complement to a day on the slopes – or a great family destination in itself.
