Although The Little Mermaid will journey from Denmark to China in April in order to participate in the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, tourists will still be able to see the world famous sculpture at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, thanks to a loan from the artist’s family.

Descendants of Edvard Eriksen, who sculpted The Little Mermaid, have generously lent the family's private copy of the mermaid to Tivoli Gardens. She will be revealed when Tivoli opens for its 168th season on 15 April 2010.

The Little Mermaid is Denmark's most famous sculpture. Usually, tourists visit her on Langelinie in the Copenhagen harbor, where she has been since 1913. During the course of the Shanghai 2010 Expo, which runs May 1-Oct 31, her “twin sister” will temporarily take her place in a different Copenhagen location: the five-star amusement park, Tivoli Gardens, where she will be on public view for the first time. She will be placed in the Tivoli Lake with the City Hall Tower serving as a scenic background. She will return to the owners after the world expo, when her sister returns from China.

Lars Liebst, Tivoli’s CEO, says, "We are proud and pleased that the descendants of Edvard Eriksen, one of Denmark's most outstanding artists, have loaned Tivoli a piece of invaluable cultural history. We are honoured that it is visitors to Tivoli who will have this unique experience in the summer of 2010."

Alice Eriksen, grand-daughter of the sculptor, says, “We chose Tivoli because of the fairy-tale magic the Gardens have."

About the Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen harbour is a world famous sculpture. It illustrates H.C. Andersen's fairytale entitled “The Little Mermaid”. The Little Mermaid was a gift to Copenhagen, donated by brewer Carl Jacobsen and executed by sculptor Edvard Eriksen. Edvard Eriksen’s wife Eline Eriksen sat for the sculpture. The Little Mermaid was placed permanently at Langelinie in the Copenhagen harbour on 23 August 1913, and every year on her birthday she is visited by bikini-clad, fellow “mermaids” who jump into the water in her honour.
