World's Fairs: INTEL Joins as The Official Partner of The USA National Pavilion at The 2010 Shanghai World Expo

The USA National Pavilion organizers and Intel Corporation announced today that Intel will join as the Official Microprocessor Partner of the USA Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.  As the world’s leading chip manufacturer, Intel will present its cutting-edge technology and exciting experience to the Expo visitors and demonstrate how information technology can make better cities, better lives and a better tomorrow.

Ellen R. Eliasoph, Co-Chair of the USA National Pavilion, remarked, “We are honored that Intel has chosen to support our National Pavilion.  It is our great privilege to work with Intel to showcase its innovations and technology.  In choosing to sponsor the USA National Pavilion, Intel is joining as a partner in our effort to deepen U.S.- China understanding and to enhance the friendship and cooperation between our two peoples.”

“We are proud to have Intel as an Official Partner of the USA National Pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai,” said the U.S. Consul General in Shanghai, Beatrice Camp,  “and welcome the innovative technologies that this cutting-edge American company will bring to the show.”

“Intel’s decision to join as an official partner of the USA National Pavilion is great news,” said U.S. Commissioner General to the World Expo Shanghai 2010, Jose H. Villarreal. “Intel’s technology and innovation will help to create a pavilion that will showcase the best of America, and will make our Chinese hosts and visitors as well as the American people proud.”

“We are delighted to support the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and to participate in the USA National Pavilion, which will be a platform to improve understanding and communication among people all over the world,” said Ian Yang, Intel Vice President, and President, Intel China. “We believe the Expo is a great opportunity for Shanghai to accelerate its economic growth and advance its international status. With our regional headquarters in Shanghai, Intel will continue to contribute to the development of Shanghai and China.”

The 2010 Shanghai World Expo will be held from May 1 through October 31, 2010 with a projected 70 million attendees, 95% of whom are expected to come from Mainland China.  This will be China’s first role as host of a world expo, and already over 190 nations have committed to participate.

At over 60,000 square feet (5600 square meters), the USA National Pavilion will be one of the largest national pavilions at the Expo.  It will showcase American culture, values, innovation and business in China’s most dynamic city, while at the same time celebrating the friendship and cooperation between the U.S. and China.  Intel will support the construction of the USA National Pavilion and showcase its next generation computing experience and applications.

Intel began to invest in Shanghai to support the Pudong development in the 1990s. After the establishment of a world-class test and assembly facility in Pudong, Intel invested to set up its R&D lab in the Ziru Park, which has grown into Intel’s R&D and innovation center in China. Meanwhile, Shanghai has become Intel China’s regional headquarters. In February this year, Intel increased the registered capital by $110 million in Shanghai to improve the operations in China.

“To grow together with China” is Intel’s strategy in the country. Since entering China in 1985, Intel has become one of the largest foreign investors in China with total committed investment reaching $4.5 billion. For Intel, China is the country, outside US, with the most invested resources, complete organization structure and widest businesses. Intel now has four R&D outfits in China, chip assembly and testing plant in Chengdu, and the $2.5 billion 300mm wafer fab in Dalian which will be put into production in 2010. To support the government agenda, Intel is actively participating in the infrastructure construction, traditional industry upgrade and rural ICT development in the country, and making its contributions with innovative technologies.

In accordance with U.S. legal requirements, the USA Pavilion is being operated through a non-profit organization.  The entity, Shanghai Expo 2010 Inc., is co-chaired by Ellen R. Eliasoph and Nick S. Winslow.  The U.S. Department of State is prohibited by U.S. federal law from spending appropriated funds in international expositions.  Therefore, U.S. private sector participation is essential to raise the necessary funds to design, build and operate the USA National Pavilion.
