I was born in Oldham, Lancs, back in the late 60s - my mum reckons 'Penny Lane' was playing on the radio as I was delivered but it could have been the pethadine. My passions, outside the amusement industry, are my family, wildlife, diving and cricket, God's own sport. I am also a rarity in that I am a Manchester United fan from Manchester. Been going to Alton Towers for over 25 years, we had trips there from primary school. I still remember how exciting it was when they had their first ride, a cresta run/slide which burnt your legs and ripped your shorts. Love this industry with its passion and drive, its sheer creativity and invention. Endlessly fascinating too. Did you know that Thomas Bridges from Alcorn McBride once played trumpet with Hoagy Carmichael (of 'Georgia' fame)?

Themed Design: Scary Monsters and Dr Who in 3D
I can still remember how excited my friends and I were back in January
1974. Dr. Who, the British science fiction show, the staple of any self
respecting small boy’s Saturday night TV watching and generator of a
million nightmares, was to be the subject of an exhibition in Blackpool,
Lancashire’s coastal resort. The tales of “The Doctor” (we never knew his name) and his
battle against monsters from across the galaxy transfixed us each
weekend on the television and news of the exhibition spread rapidly
around the school. ...View more

Getting High at the Zoo
This week sees the opening of the new zip line at Gatorland in Orlando.
The course will carry riders over the park’s Cuban Crocodiles whilst
giving riders a bird’s eye view of Gatorland’s centerpiece, its breeding
marsh, home to over 150 big crocodiles and alligators. Riders will
get as high as 56 feet and reach up to 30 mph....View more

Theme Park Design and why Steve Alcorn’s Time Portal won’t get made
"If a theme park attraction were a kitchen it would be pretty crowded, and not just with cooks." I thought I had a good working idea of what went on behind the scenes at
a major theme park, I really did. Turns out I didn’t and were it not
for Steve Alcorn’s new book I’d still be none the wiser......View more

Optimism with a Frosty Reception : The IAAPA Expo 2010
The annual IAAPA Expo was back to its spiritual home of Orlando in November
after last year’s visit to Las Vegas. Many felt a sense of
relief to be back in Florida and
there was a palpable sense of excitement and optimism in the air as the
show began. So what did I learn during my week at the show, other than
that I can’t play golf, The Adirondacks are a mountain range and I still
don’t like grits?...View more

Cold-Blooded Fun at Orlando's Gatorland Theme Park
With a day to spare before the IAAPA Expo last week, I took a visit to
Gatorland, which although not on every tourist’s hit list for Orlando,
certainly should be, being not only one of the city’s oldest attractions
(opened in 1949) but also one of its best, with Tripadvisor ranking it
7th out of the city’s 196 attractions listed....View more

Well Above Par: at IAAPA's Charity Golf Event
I don’t play much golf over here in England. Cricket’s my thing, with
its dizzying combination of grace, power and elegance, each ball a
challenge and a contest , each minute fizzing with excitement. Golf
just never did it for me. I think of an English golf club and I don’t
think of sporting endeavour or athleticism....View more

Holograms and “Gamification” Raising the Bar for Theme Parks
On every gamer’s Christmas list, the eagerly awaited Xbox Kinetic is
due to be launched later this year. Set to be the next step up from
the hugely successful Wii platform, Kinetic does not require a hand

Themed Design: When Less is More...
BRC Imagination Arts' CEO and founder Bob Rogers spoke recently about
the importance for the themed designer to focus initially on what the
audience wants to see, or as he rather more poetically put it, "to look into their hearts". The story and the experience is the
key, and the theming, the design, the technology should be a secondary
consideration, as these are a means to an end, the method by which the
designer creates the experience and communicates the story....View more

Take two rocks, twice a day after meals...
England’s Lyme Regis on the West Dorset coast is one of the world’s
great fossil sites – it was on the town’s beach that 18th century

While exhibitors remain on tenterhooks as to whether they might actually
be able to make it to the DEAL show in Dubai later this week –
frustratingly Iceland’s’ volcanoes haven't provided an
