Monday, June 02, 2008 Brush Boarding at Crealy There is nothing new under the sun . Everything has been done . Whatever your great idea might be, it's not new. However, you've been surfing. You've been snowboarding. But have you ever Brush Boarded?

The marketing and the buzz created each year around a park's new attractions is often just that: clever spiel and hyperbole selling a revamp as a new attraction or a tweaked ride as a brand new experience. Sure these tweaks might be on grand scale but still the ride itself is nothing new. Perhaps the ride engineers, the hardware guys, might have something to say about this. Are the software engineers having all the fun? Totally new I reckon is Brush Boarding. I visited Crealy Great Adventure Park in Cornwall the other day for the launch of Extreme Sports Zone's new ride/attraction. On a beautiful day with a full park and the Beach Boys on the stereo, surf dudes and surfer chicks queued to take a ride on the the Brush Board ramp. A feature will follow for Blooloop but for now above is a clip of an 8 year old's very first go. Reminds me a bit of The Slide (widely touted to be the 'new Step' (it wasn't). But this at least has more of a point - in that you can learn to balance on a bit of board without drowning in the attempt! Go that eight-year old!

What was the old step? Yeah the girl done good. But in truth I was taken aback by how quickly novices and kids took to the brush boarding. They can change the speed for the little kids and up it to insane levels for the true dyed-in-the-wool surfer dudes like myself. While I was there the children seemed to be dong much the same as the pro surfers who arrived later on, all in the speed you see. This flexibility is what sets this ride apart. That, and of course thats it's totally unique. (That was a Californian valley speak style use of the word 'totally', I wasn't looking to qualify the uniqueness). I meant it's like totally, like, awesome man...

This looks an innovative move forward - not just as a new sport but also as a valuable training tool for novice surfers/snowboarders etc. We will watch its development with interest.
