Fulldome Video Gains Followers at Jackson Hole Symposium
A report from Dan Neafus, a founder of the trade group IMERSA, which
seeks to promote the diverse applications of fulldome technology in
multiple markets.
140 Media Professionals from around the world converged at the Jackson Hole Symposium Sept. 23-25th to explore new media opportunities. A dynamic slate of sessions featured representatives from cultural institutions, National Geographic, Discovery, PBS and non-broadcast media outlets. In-depth panel topics included; Immersive Theater, Universal Access and Multiplatform Distribution.
Participants networked with representatives from Broadcasting, the Library of Congress, NASA, Museums and equipment manufacturers. The abundance of Wildlife filmmakers in attendance were encouraged by the range of growing markets for their content and the opportunity for collaboration and re-purposing of their work. The Informal learning community demonstrated a wide range of innovative programming and technologies including Quest, KQED Public Television San Francisco who cater to a large audience of web viewers. Event co-sponsors; Denver Museum of Nature & Science (DMNS.org) demonstrated an affordable, interactive live broadcast distributed over IP & satellite between the Museum staff in Denver and audience members in Jackson.
Of particular interest was a 2K screening of a widely distributed program on Black Holes. Utilizing a clever “Pre-purposing” workflow, Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity, originated as a 4K Fulldome (fisheye) Planetarium show with a 16 channel soundtrack. It was then carefully re-formatted to; HD, SD and even webcast on JOOST . DMNS will be exploring ways to add 3D to the content pipeline in the future. NASA joined the party by providing a 25 foot GeoDome portable Planetarium running a wrap-around version of the Black Holes show.
Encouraged by the enthusiastic response from attendees, organizers now look forward to a repeat of the symposium next October, in conjunction with the 2009 Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival. Emerging trends will be further explored including pre-purposing media, community building, and public participation in developing valuable, co-created content. Hope to see you there!
