Saturday, February 05, 2011 Museums: Smithsonian’s attendance tops record year and Tate outgrow galleries    Last year was a great year for The Smithsonian Museums here in the US and the Tate’s four galleries in the UK.  The attendances generated by The Smithsonian's 19 Museums and zoo, and the Tate’s four galleries were both listed in “BlooloopFacts” on our news page in January.  Here is a recap.

The Smithsonian is the world’s biggest museum and research complex, consisting of 19 museums , the National Zoological Park and 9 research facilities. Since 2009, when it was reported that the Smithsonian had a record year, with over 30 million visits, the 30.2 million generated in 2010 topped that.

The four Tate galleries - Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St.Ives, Cornwall and Tate Modern - attracted more than 7 million people last year and according to the Tate Organization the galleries were only designed to hold 4 to 5 million visitors.

I was interested to read about these museums and wonder if Blooloop could perhaps expand the coverage given to this type of visitor attraction. Living in the UK, I know how many of our provincial towns and cities have museums and galleries full of all kinds of treasures. For the most part, overseas tourists miss out on these, concentrating their time in London. It seems a shame that these other places are not, for the most part, brought to their notice
